The environment in recent years has become very dynamic with variable weather patterns, registering fluctuations in temperature, humidity, and precipitation as a consequence of Climate Change. Climate change, therefore, has been reported to have compromised the ecological and environmental integrity of living systems by inducing lifecycle changes in pathogens, vectors, and reservoirs; new and emerging diseases of plants and food and domestic and wild animals; interfering with the synchrony between interacting species in a particular habitat; and modifying or destroying habitats. As a result, environmental issues have gained prominence in terms of climate change and its adverse effects on the health of humans, animals, and the environment.
One of the ways to slow and roll back the effects of climate change and hence care for the Earth is to invest in tree planting. Trees release oxygen and emit about half of the carbon dioxide they absorb and store (sequestrate) the rest in the soil, their roots, stems, and branches) as biomass while they are alive. It is for this reason that global days like Earth Day, World Environment Day, etc. are celebrated annually to raise awareness and create action for the protection of the environment. These actions are supported by many non-governmental organizations, businesses, and government entities, and represent the primary United Nations outreach day supporting the Environment globally.
The theme of Earth Day 2023 was “Invest in Our Planet” by reducing the negative environmental impacts on the planet. Educating the public, especially the younger generation on the importance of environmental protection is a sustainable means to preserving the earth sustainably. As the Bible says, “train up a child in a way he or she should grow, so that ones grown would not depart from the truth”. Once these younger ones are educated on tree planting, as a method of conserving the earth, they will grow with it and it will be passed on to their younger generations, for you can not teach what you don’t know. Sensitization was done via 4 schools and also we had a visit at the country’s national tv station CRTV
